The 36 clubs of the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga discussed the restart of match operations in the 2019/2020 season by video conference during an extraordinary DFL general meeting on Thursday and finally set the date of May 16, 2020 as the exact date of a restart.
The season continues with the 26th matchday, the other matchdays follow in the order originally planned. It is planned that the last matchday of the Bundesliga will be played on June 27, 2020. Since an adjustment of the general schedule is necessary for the scheduling of the match days up to the end of the season, there are currently final coordination talks with the German Football Federation. Covid-19 restrictions
All teams and players have already been tested for the second time before they started training together. It comprised of 1,695 tests. Two cases of infection were identified and reported immediately to the local health authorities, which will decide on what steps to take. An earlier round of tests last week resulted in 10 positives. All the affected individuals have been isolated. Each team will be quarantined together in a hotel before the first round of games, and they will be tested for the virus. As the season goes on, the players will be tested at least twice a week until the matches are completed. The games will then be played at empty stadiums, or as “ghost games” as they are referred to in German, a situation that Christian Seifert, the Bundesliga chief executive officer, acknowledged was not ideal. “In a crisis, threatening the very existence of some clubs, however, it is the only way to keep the leagues in their current form.” Game officials, support staff and broadcast media will only have access to the stadiums, limited to a maximum of around 300 people. The tight deadline to complete the season will require teams to play two games a week, and staff and players to undergo thousands of tests.
One error, let alone a spate of positive cases, could force the season to be abandoned, and the repercussions would be felt well beyond Germany’s borders. Strict health and hygiene measures will be implemented at all the matches. Teams will arrive at the stadium separately and rituals such as pre-match handshakes and team photographs will be abandoned. There will be no player mascots. Protective masks will be mandatory for medical personnel, pitch-side sinks will be required for hygiene reasons and those involved in television production, doors will remain open to avoid contaminated handles, while press conferences will be conducted virtually. Indeed, everyone in the dugouts will have to sit two or three seats apart to maintain some form of social distancing as a precaution. And players face the prospect of washing their own kit to avoid contamination. Temperature checks will be taken using an ear thermometer on everyone at a security-controlled entrance to the stadium. Security will be in place to ensure fans don't assemble outside stadiums while matches are going on. The same day as the first round results were released, Hertha Berlin said it had indefinitely suspended a forward, Salomon Kalou, after he posted a video on Facebook from the team’s training ground in which he could be seen breaching a number of the protocols, shaking hands with teammates and appearing to disrupt a coronavirus test. The biggest early test of the league’s plans will probably come when Borussia Dortmund and Schalke, two intense rivals, meet in the first round of games. The last match played in the Bundesliga was Borussia Mönchengladbach’s 2-1 win over Cologne, in front of an empty stadium, on March 11. When the league was suspended, the majority of the 18 teams had nine games left to play. Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen have a game in hand. An exciting title race was developing with reigning champions Bayern Munich four points clear of Borussia Dortmund in second and five clear of RB Leipzig in third. Bayern still has to make the trip to Dortmund, however, so it is far from a foregone conclusion. At the bottom, Paderborn looked doomed but second-bottom Werder Bremen were still fighting and Fortuna Dusseldorf appeared to be on course for the relegation play-off.
