MLS Outright Betting Odds: Who to back and why
The 23rd MLS season began on March 3rd, with reigning champions Toronto FC stuttering early on in their attempt to match their domestic treble from last year. What’s evident from the first few hectic weeks of the new season is that every side has weaknesses, which makes for a very exciting season ahead.
MLS Outright Betting Odds Preview: The Holders
Toronto won the Eastern Conference by a whopping 12 points last season, breaking the previous MLS points record set by LA Galaxy in 1998, and they went on to win the MLS Cup at BMO Field by beating Seattle Sounders 2-0 courtesy of goals from ex-Sunderland forward Jozy Altidore and Victor Vazquez, both of whom are still at the club for the new season. That win completed a terrific treble winning season for the Canadian side.
TFC haven’t been too busy in the transfer market pre-season, grabbing Ager Aketxe from Bilbao and Caleb Patterson-Sewell from Jacksonville Armada on free transfers, and they have kept most of their squad from last season, so you’d expect them to be up there come the end of the season. However, partly due to CONCACAF Champions League distractions, they’ve started poorly and have a lot to do to catch early pacesetters New York City FC and Atlanta United already.
Toronto FC Odds: 10.75
MLS Outright Betting Odds Preview: The Favourites
The bookies have New York City FC down as favourites for the MLS Cup this season, just ahead of Atlanta United and Los Angeles FC in the betting. Patrick Vieira’s side finished runners up to Toronto last season, and if they can continue their impressive early season form, not many would bet against them securing their first MLS Cup since their formation five years ago.
Patrick Vieira has been busy in the transfer market during the off season, bringing in no less than 13 players, but he’s lost just as many too, most notable young Jack Harrison who was sold to Manchester City at the end of January for a fee of around £3m. He’ll be hoping the Malmo duo Jo Inge Berget and Anton Tinnerholm will hit the ground running in the MLS, but an early season hammering away at Portland Timbers has shown that this MLS season is going to tight.
New York City FC Odds: 5.00
MLS Outright Betting Odds Preview: The Dark Horses
The bookies feel new franchise Los Angeles FC have a fantastic chance of winning the MLS Cup in their very first season. OK, so they may have lost to rivals LA Galaxy in March after being 3-0 up, but early season wins against Seattle Sounders and Montreal Impact have made everyone sit up and take note of how good this side are.
Manager Bob Bradley has made some shrewd signings in the transfer window, bringing in the likes of Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi for a combined £6.75m, but the whole squad seem to have gelled well in such a short space of time, so MLS take note, this team are not just here to make up the numbers in the Western Conference.
Los Angeles FC Odds: 8.50
MLS Outright Betting Odds Preview: The Outsiders
A lot of critics have already written off New York Red Bulls as a threat this season, but after an unbeaten first couple of months of the MLS season, their price sticks out. There’s still a long way to go, but can you really dismiss the five-time Eastern Conference winners so early on?
OK, so they’ve only enjoyed one MLS Cup final in their history, which was way back in 2008 in a loss to Columbus Crew, but Head Coach Jesse Marsch has brought in talented defensive duo Kevin Politz and Tim Parker during the off season to shore up their back line, and with Bradley Wright-Phillips continuing to bang in the goals at the other end of the pitch, write them off at your peril.
New York Red Bulls Odds: 20.50
