France vs Switzerland takes place on June 28 in Bucharest in the round of 16 of Euro2020. France qualified for the knockout stages after winning Group F following a final match draw with Portugal while Switzerland made it through by virtue of being one of the best third placed teams. Group F earned its pre-tournament tag as the “Group of Death” with all four teams able to qualify going into the last round of games. The lead of the group changed hands several times during those final 90 minutes but it was France who emerged victorious from the group by virtue of remaining unbeaten. Now they have to build on those successes if they are to live up to their pre-tournament billing as favourites. Much will depend on Karim Benzema, who has continued his streak of scoring with two more against Portugal, while Paul Pogba looks ten times the player who has frustrated Manchester United fans last season.
Switzerland’s 3-1 win over Turkey in their final group match was enough to put them into third in the group and qualify as one of the best third placed teams. It’s safe to say the Swiss are one of the unfancied teams out there but the group stage defeat to Italy was their first defeat this calendar year; likewise while Xherdan Shaqiri has struggled to get game time for Liverpool he showed his undoubted class against Turkey scoring a sublime strike to really take the game away from their opponents. Should Shaqiri get that much time and space against France it’s possible he could make them pay.

Injuries
France head coach Didier Deschamps has a minor crisis heading into the Switzerland clash with both Marcus Thuram and Thomas Lemar limping out of training with injuries. While neither have played much part so far in France’s games, should they miss the round of 16 game they will only deplete a squad further that is already missing Ousmane Dembele and Lucas Digne for the remainder of the tournament. Lucas Hernandez is also a doubt with a knee injury. All of these injuries puts pressure on the remaining players to hold it together for this match and should they make it further the ones to follow.
By contrast there are no reports of injuries from within the Swiss camp and Vladimir Petkovic’s charges have had a little bit longer to recuperate from their group stage exertions than the French. As previously mentioned Xherdan Shaqiri is key to the Swiss attack, and if he can support the front pairing of Haris Seferovic and Breel Embolo then it’s possible that Switzerland could ask big questions of the French.

France are hot favourites for this game, with bookies offering no more than 1.50 against the French winning this game in 90 minutes. That is no surprise bearing in mind the strength of these teams on paper and the fact that France have not lost to Switzerland in their last seven meetings. However, the injuries to the French side may well have taken their toll and 4.00 against Switzerland to qualify could be generous.
