Do you believe in Santa Claus? Everyone knows all that Santa will bring presents to all the boys and girls who have been good this Christmas. Outside of this once-a-year job however, what does Santa get up to? One of the answers to that is on the football pitch.
FC Santa Claus History
In Rovaniemi, Northern Finland, Santa Claus is very much big business. The capital of Lapland has long claimed to be home of Santa Claus – indeed you can visit him at Santa Park which is just outside of Rovaniemi. Rovaniemi is also home to FC Santa Claus, who will play the 2017 in the Kolmonen – the Finnish 4th tier.
Founded in 1993 as a result of a merger between Rovaniemen Reipas and Rovaniemen Lappi, FC Santa Claus Arctic Circle have bounced around the third and fourth tiers of Finnish football in their 22 years of existence.
FC Santa Claus Season
Last season wasn’t a great one – finishing the year relegated from the Kakkonen (3rd tier) having won two games all season. In a season where they conceded 102 goals their biggest humiliation came in the penultimate round. Suffering an injury crisis, the team turned up at AC Kajaani with just 11 fit players – three of whom were goalkeepers. That went as well as could be expected, with Kajaani finishing up as 16-0 winners.
It’s not always been that rough. In 2014, Santa were celebrating being promoted to the third division having won the league – Jaako Paavilainen scoring the decisive goal which sent the players and fans alike into raptures. The commentator on the video certainly enjoyed it.
Will next year be better for Santa? While the man in red is out delivering toys and gifts to all of us let’s hope someone brings them a few extra players…
