This weekend’s Premier League games threw up an interesting statistic that might be useful for some in-play betting tips in the future. He might be parodied for being a “boring” football but James Milner has added another Premier League record to his collection after scoring a penalty in the 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester City at the weekend. Milner now holds the Premier League record for most games scored in without his team losing.
James Milner’s record-breaking history
The former Leeds United, Newcastle United and Manchester City man has had a long and varied career since breaking through to the Leeds first team as a 16-year-old. He was the second youngest ever debutant in the Premier League when he came on as a substitute for Jason Wilcox at the age of 16 years and 309 days against West Ham United. Just over a month later James Milner became the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer when he scored in Leeds’ 2-1 win over Sunderland on Boxing Day 2002.
With 444 Premier League appearances Milner has established himself as a player with true longevity in the English top flight but his goal against Man City meant he passed Darius Vassell for the number of games scored in without his team losing. The penalty meant that James Milner has now scored in 47 Premier League games notching up 37 wins and ten draws.
Milner has scored a total of 48 goals for five different Premier League sides – Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool.
Who did James Milner pass to set this record?
The record was previously held by Darius Vassell, who scored in 46 different Premier League games for Aston Villa and Manchester City without being on the losing side. The next closest in the rankings is the only player who is close to beating Milner’s record – Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard has scored in 42 different Premier League games for Chelsea and Arsenal, winning 34 and drawing eight.
The next two closest are Nigerian international forward Salomon Kalou (32 games for Chelsea, 29 wins) and former Norwegian international midfielder Oyvind Leonhardsen (28 games for Wimbledon, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa).
With James Milner being designated penalty taker for Liverpool it is possible he could advance the record even further this season – provided the rest of Jurgen Klopp’s men don’t let him down.
