This week sees a number of midweek Premier League games with teams catching up games postponed due to involvement in Europe and in later rounds of cup competition. I’ve put together my Premier League tips for Wednesday’s games to help give you inspiration for your bets this week.
Arsenal will hope they can build on their FA Cup semi-final victory against Leicester City while Crystal Palace face Spurs wondering if they can pick up a second major scalp in four days. However, the most intriguing game for me is the one between the bottom two sides, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.
Premier League tips: Middlesbrough v Sunderland
While neither side are mathematically relegated yet I think for both sets of fans it’s only a matter of time; with Boro and Sunderland lying nine and twelve points away from safety respectively. As such I think this match will have something of a funereal air – I’m not expecting a classic at all.
The sacking of Aitor Karanka has not turned around results for Boro in the way the fans would have hoped. Still without a win in the Premier League in 2017, Middlesbrough find themselves waylaid at the foot of the table and a thumping 4-0 defeat to Bournemouth at home will not have improved morale at all. In seven league games at the Riverside Stadium this calendar year, Boro have scored four times.
Sunderland have won this year, smashing Crystal Palace 4-0 away in February. However, since then they’ve lost six of their eight games and have conceded 16 goals. Ironically, their two goals against West Ham this weekend were their first goals since that Crystal Palace game. Suffice it to say, it’s not going great for David Moyes.
With it being a derby too, this is a tough game to call but I suspect it’s going to be one where both teams cancel each other out. My Premier League tips for this game is to back the draw at 3.32.
Premier League Tips: Arsenal v Leicester City
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has taken a lot of stick of late as Arsenal have struggled to get near the top four in the table and have been bombed out of Europe. However, their extra time victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup at the weekend should bolster confidence that they’re not actually a bad side.
The switch to an unfamiliar system with three centre backs has baffled pundits slightly but I think it’s starting to show dividends, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in particular at the weekend looking like he can benefit from the new shape.
Leicester have steadied the ship since the departure of Claudio Ranieri and have gone back to what made them so hard to beat last season. A lot of that has to do with the purchase of Wilfred Ndidi, with the Nigerian offering the sort of defensive protection and box to box play that was missing since the departure of N’Golo Kante at the beginning of the season. However, away from home they are still vulnerable to teams with pace as both Everton and Crystal Palace have proven in recent weeks.
I think Arsenal should pick up the points with a fair amount of ease in this fixture as they look to get back into the Champions League places and they are my Premier League tips to win at 1.60.
Premier League Tips: Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur
I’ll say one thing for Sam Allardyce – he knows how to get a team performing. Since arriving at Selhurst Park Palace have improved no end and the win over Liverpool at the weekend has I think pretty much ended any remaining relegation worries Palace fans might have had.
However, Spurs are a different kind of gravy to Liverpool. Although they lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final, Mauricio Pochettino’s team still look like they could challenge for the title. While the English media have unsurprisingly concentrated on Dele Alli and Harry Kane as two of the lynchpins of the team, I think they have overlooked just how much Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen have contributed to their success.
If Chelsea falter tonight in their match against Southampton it could be that Spurs can make up even more ground; I think either way the motivation is absolutely there to get the positive result at Selhurst Park. My Premier League Tips for this game are Spurs to win at 1.63.
