While many leagues in Europe take their customary winter break it’s business as usual in England and the Premier League. The pick of the games this week is the London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Here’s our betting tips and analysis for this fixture.
Spurs Betting Tips and Analysis
Tottenham come into this game on a high, having scored eight goals in back-to-back away victories at Southampton and Watford. It’s been a profitable few days in particular for Dele Alli, with the England midfielder scoring a brace in each of those games while his England team-mate Harry Kane has also notched three.
While both Alli and Kane have been in imperious form the Chelsea backline represents a large step up in class from their previous opponents and it will be interesting to see if they can get the same returns.
Kyle Walker returns from suspension but faces a fight on his hands to win his place in defence back from Kieran Trippier. The former Burnley right-back took his chance in the first team with gusto and supplied two assists in the 4-1 victory over Watford. It’s a big decision to make for Mauricio Pochettino but the likelihood is England defender Walker will be recalled.
Chelsea Betting Tips and Analysis
Antonio Conte’s Chelsea head into the fixture against Spurs knowing that a win will see them get one over not one but two of their London rivals. Victory tomorrow would see them not only establish an eight-point lead at the top of the league table but it would also see them equal Arsenal’s Premier League record of 14 consecutive wins, set in 2002.
The big worry for Chelsea is a potential injury to wing-back Marcos Alonso. Much of Chelsea’s success this season has been attributed to the switch to a 3-4-3, with Alonso playing on the left hand side. Should Alonso be injured, Chelsea face a quandary of who to replace him with. Cesar Azpilicueta has been used as a left-back by Conte, but moving him to left wing back would disrupt what has been a rock solid defensive unit. Another option would be Ola Aina, but like the Spaniard Azpilicueta he is also right-footed.
Premier League Prediction
The match probably represents the biggest test Chelsea will have had this season and as such is a very difficult one to call. Spurs have title ambitions of their own and the form of Alli and Kane suggests that they might actually have two truly title-class players on their hands. The question will be if Spurs can broach the Chelsea defence in the same manner as their last two games – and if they can, if Chelsea can create enough chances for their front line to win the game.
