Super Bowl LI takes place this weekend between the New England Patriots of the AFC and the NFC Champions, the Atlanta Falcons. It’s one of the most watched sporting events in the world – but who will be the winning team? We’ve put together this guide with the best NFL betting picks, tips and analysis to help your betting profits.
New England Patriots Picks and Analysis
The Patriots go into this Super Bowl as three point favourites. This will be their fourth Super Bowl in the last eight years and an NFL-record ninth appearance. It’s the seventh appearance in the last 16 years under quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belicheck. The Pats have only won one of their three previous appearances – in 2015, losing on both previous occasions to Eli Manning and the New York Giants. Historically, all of their appearances in the Super Bowl in recent times have been fairly tight games with only one being lost by the team who scored last.
Despite losing Brady to four games due to suspension and Rob Gronkowski to injury in mid-season, the Pats still recorded an NFL-best 14-2 regular season record. They were third highest scorers in the regular season with 441 points, and had the best defensive record having only conceded 250. The Patriots were seeded #1 in the playoffs and defeated the Houston Texans 34-16 in the divisional round and the Pittsburgh Steelers 36-17 in the AFC Championship game to reach the Super Bowl.
Atlanta Falcons Picks and Analysis
The Falcons finished the season with an 11-5 record, earning them the #2 seed slot in the playoffs. The team had been in decline prior to the 2016 regular season, failing in three previous attempts to make the playoffs. This is only their second Super Bowl appearance having lost Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999 to the Denver Broncos.
The Falcons have the offensive firepower, outscoring every other team in the NFL scoring 540 points. Quarterback Matt Ryan led the league in passer rating (117.1). While his completions only ranked ninth (373), he ranked second in the NFL for passing yards (4,944) and touchdowns (38). Receiver Julio Jones caught 83 passes for 1409 yards and six touchdowns (2nd in the NFL). The Falcons beat the Seatlle Seahawks 36-20 and the Green Bay Packers 44-21 to reach the Super Bowl
Super Bowl Pick and Analysis
While the Patriots are favourites, the Falcons offensive line has to be seen to be believed. They are a steadily improving side with plenty of options for Ryan to throw to and they are the ProTipster pick to beat the spread (+3). With this amount of firepower on show from both sides, over 58.5 points also looks the right pick.
