The final matches in the fifth game week of the Copa Libertadores will be played in the early hours of Friday morning European time with two intriguing match-ups left. As always, I’ve taken a look at what betting value there is available to put together my Copa Libertadores tips and analysis.
Copa Libertadores Tips: Melgar v River Plate
It’s been a good week for River Plate. They overcame arch rivals Boca Juniors in the Buenos Aires El Clasico 3-1, with Sebastian Driussi playing a crucial role and scoring. However, Driussi will most likely miss the game in Peru as boss Marcelo Gallardo rotates his squad.
River Plate lead the group by three points and are assured of qualification. Melgar on the other hand are bottom of the group and need to win to have any chance of getting any further in continental competition.
They aren’t in the best shape. Despite leading the Peruvian championship after 14 rounds, Melgar are winless in three. They’ll be hoping for big things from Emanuel Herrea, who scored twice in the 4-2 away defeat to River Plate earlier in the group stage.
Despite River being the better side on paper, I’m going with the home team. Melgar have more motivation to win this one, and playing at the altitude of over 2,300 metres is always a big ask for players who are not acclimatised to it. Because of this, my Copa Libertadores tips for this game are Melgar to win at 2.75.
Copa Libertadores Tips: Botafogo v Atletico Nacional Medellin
It’s crunch time in Group A. Should Brazilian side Botafogo win they will join Barcelona SC of Ecuador in the next phase; lose and they hand a chance to Atletico Nacional to sneak through.
Botafogo are in poor form. A surprising home defeat to Barcelona SC two weeks ago ensured the Ecuadorians will qualify for the next phase while domestically they have only won once in their last four games, in the Copa do Brasil. It’s not helping that they’ve got a team full of injuries too.
Domestically, Atletico Nacional are on a roll. They’ve won 15 from 18 in the Colombian top flight but they have struggled to translate that to the Copa Libertadores, with their 4-1 thrashing of Estudiantes giving them their first points in the group phase.
The question is if they can keep that momentum going. They’ve won 7 from their last 8, three consecutively away from home – and with Sassa out for Botafogo one of the main attacking threats against them is missing. It’s a big call, but my Copa Libertadores tips for this game are Atletico Nacional to win at a massive 3.26.
