Conor McGregor to take on Floyd Mayweather? The rumours of the possible matchup have reached fever pitch with a source close to the Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Conor McGregor telling English newspapers that it’s on.
Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather – is it on?
The big question is if it is on or not. In an Instagram post, Floyd Mayweather has told Conor McGregor that he needs to “take care of [his] business with the UFC”.
However, an ESPN reporter who spoke to Mayweather while both were attending the Golden State Warriors – Oklahoma City Thunder game said that the boxer had told him that “we’re getting very, very close” to the potential super-fight.
Conor McGregor on the other hand has cancelled attending a €100-a-head party in the Republic of Ireland on Friday February 17 due to an “unavoidable schedule change” which will see the Ultimate Fighting Championship superstar in Las Vegas on that date.
Conor McGregor had told reporters at an interview event in Manchester recently that
“I love the Vegas commission. We’ve come to an understanding. I’m gonna fly out there and fix it. I’m gonna get my Las Vegas boxing commission and then we’ll see where the f**k Floyd’s at?!”
Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather – where would it be held?
One of the big things that will needed to be sorted before Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather get it on in the ring will be exactly where the ring will be. Floyd Mayweather has been known to be loathe to travel far from his Nevada base and the obvious location for him would be the MGM Grand Garden where he beat his last 12 opponents.
That venue might not be acceptable to Conor McGregor though with the MMA fighter suffering his only Ultimate Fighting Championship defeat at that venue last March to Nate Diaz.
However, McGregor won the rematch just a stone’s throw away at the T-Mobile Arena and he may suggest this as a venue as an alternative. Of course, McGregor has the small problem of an unpaid fine of $60,000 for throwing a bottle of water and that will need to be fixed before any fight is scheduled.
Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather – when will it be officially announced
The word is the fight could be officially sanctioned and announced within a couple of weeks, to be held in 2017. Whether it is or not however is down to the two combatants – and we along with the rest of the world are looking forward to a potential billion-dollar showdown.
