The Champion’s League is back this week with a bang, with two quarter-final first leg matches taking place on Tuesday and two on Wednesday. As normal, I’m going to divide my Champions League tips and analysis into two. First up this week are the matches between Juventus and Barcelona along with Borussia Dortmund against Monaco.
Champions League Tips and Analysis – Juventus v Barcelona
It’s still somewhat astonishing Barcelona have made it this far after the last round first leg in Paris. Yet the way they played at the Camp Nou was reminiscent of everything that is good about their side and they deserve to face the Italian champions in the last eight.
Juventus have an astonishing home record. They have won their last 14 games in Turin, and have gone 47 home games without losing – their last defeat in any competition at home was in August 2015.
Barcelona on the other hand lost their last away game 2-0 to Malaga and have lost three of their last five away from the Camp Nou in all competitions. From what I’ve seen, the Blaugrana have looked fallible this season – especially in games where their talisman Lionel Messi is missing.
This game is a tough one to call but I think Juventus will continue their fine home record with another win. My Champion’s League tips for this game are Juventus to win at 2.56.
Champions League Tips: Borussia Dortmund v Monaco
I was excited when this match was drawn because all I could think of would be the goals in the game. Between them, Borussia Dortmund and Monaco have had 63 goals in their 16 games in the group and knockout stages – which included Monaco’s crazy round of 16 win over Manchester City.
Domestically, it’s been a poor season for Dortmund. Thrashed 4-1 by Bayern Munich at the weekend, Thomas Tuchel’s men lie fourth in the Bundesliga. However, they have won their last five games at home, scoring 17 goals in the process – including a 4-0 win over Benfica and a 6-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Monaco have had a great season. They lead Ligue 1 from PSG by three points and have won their last nine games on the spin since going down to Manchester City 5-3 at the Etihad. What makes it more impressive is that they’ve done it with players they have brought through the ranks rather than with an array of expensively signed galaticos.
The easy tip is goals – our tip of the day was over 2.5 goals and I’d be tempted to go higher. Dortmund are favourites for this game but I do wonder if Monaco can surprise them – if I had real balls I’d go for Monaco to win at 4.54. As it is, my Champion’s League tips are Monaco to win or draw at 1.97.
