Ukraine vs England

Ukraine vs England

Ukraine vs England is the final quarter-final of Euro2020 and takes place on July 3 in Rome. Ukraine booked their passage into the last eight thanks to a last gasp extra time win over Sweden while England triumphed 2-0 against Germany at Wembley on Tuesday. Read on for more analysis, match predictions and betting tips.

Form

It’s probably pretty safe to assume many people did not think Ukraine would still be in the tournament at this stage. Andriy Shevchenko’s side is the second lowest-ranked team left in the competition at 24, and have only won one of their four games so far in this competition in ninety minutes - and that was against group whipping boys North Macedonia. However, all of that denies the amount of courage Ukraine have showed. They scared the Netherlands in the group stage coming back from 2-0 down late on only to lose 3-2 at the death, and they were never out of the game against Austria in their final group match. In a game against Sweden that had lost all rhythm due to the number of subs used, Ukraine got the upper hand in extra time following the dismissal of Markus Danielsson and Artem Dovbyk scored a dramatic winner in injury time at the end of extra time to win it. Ukraine have shown that they will push all the way - something their opponents need to bear in mind.

It’s been a weird tournament for England. Despite winning three of their four games, not conceding a goal and generally managing games effectively, the England coach Gareth Southgate has been mauled by the English press for not being attacking enough. Switching to a 3-4-3 formation to counter German tactics, it looked like he was going to be in for another rough ride as that game started in dour fashion, but the introduction of Jack Grealish added a bit of oomph to England and they were able to fashion a couple of chances which their forwards Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane duly converted. Things might have been very different had Thomas Muller not put his shot wide to make it 1-1, but it might just be Southgate is a lucky manager.

Injuries

Ukraine manager Andriy Shevchenko changed to a back three against Sweden, utilising Man City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko in a left wing-back position. Andriy Malinovskyi had been a doubt before the game but he came on in the second half to play a more advanced role on the left than he had be and it would be fairly safe to assume he’ll be fit again for this one. However, Dynamo Kyiv striker Artem Besyedin will definitely be out having picked up a knee injury in the foul that saw Danielsson being sent off.

England have no new injury worries for this game, with Kieran Trippier completing ninety minutes in the win over Germany while Bukayo Saka showed no ill effects when he came off as a sub. However, coach Gareth Southgate might make changes in midfield with both Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips on one yellow card. Should either player get a booking against Ukraine then they could miss out on playing in the semi-final. Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson could come in now he is back to full fitness, while Jack Grealish will be pushing for a place in attack after his role in both goals against Germany.

Match Predictions

England are incredibly short favourites for this game at 1.40, which probably reflects their comparative strength on paper. There is absolutely no value in that and betting tips to lump on England should be ignored due to England’s continued issues with choking at the knockout stage in tournaments. Under 2.5 goals at 1.80 looks a better option, as England concede very few goals and should they be beaten, it’s more likely that it’ll be by an odd goal in a game that they cannot score in. For those who really do think football is coming home, England -1 at 2.20 is the brave choice. Will the tipsters back it with their betting tips?
