Serbia and Switzerland have met just once before but it was a memorable match and we expect to see another one on Friday. It was at the World Cup in Russia four years ago in the group stage. The remaining 30 minutes didn't produce any more goals, so now Serbia needs to beat Switzerland in order to progress to the Round of 16.
Switzerland snatched a tight 1-0 victory over Cameroon in Round 1 but didn't have a single shot on target in a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in the following match. Luckily for the Swiss, the Brazilians played at 50% of their abilities and it could be a bigger win for the South Americans only if they wanted it. With three points from two matches, A-Team now needs just a point against Serbia to advance to the knockout stage for the third consecutive time at the World Cup. Switzerland did lose six of the previous 11 matches (W4, D1).
Injuries and squad news
Serbia’s head coach Dragan Stojković doesn't have any new injury-related concerns as convalescents Dušan Vlahović and Filip Kostić are getting back to full fitness and are match fit. Stojković has an opportunity to field both Mitrović and Vlahović from the start and play with his usual 3-5-2 formation. After all, he needs a win here.
Switzerland’s head coach Murat Yakin will be without forward Noah Okafor, who is dealing with a muscle injury. Okafor isn't a starter, so his absence won’t affect the team. Breel Embolo will lead the line once again, while Xherdan Shaqiri, who didn't feature against Brazil, will probably be ready to take on Serbia.
