Europa League Last 16: Previews, Predictions, Tips

The UEFA Europa League resumes playing on Wednesday after a five-month layoff due to the coronavirus pandemic with eight matches over the course of two days. Sixteen teams are left standing, and four of the six matchups have already played one leg before the season was put on hold. The second leg for those six matchups will be played at the respective home team's stadium. We have lots of interesting matchups before we and our experts have chosen 5 of them with the best value. Don't forget to check more Europa League tips from our users!

FC Copenhagen vs Istanbul Basaksehir

Danish giants Copenhagen host recently crowned Turkish champions Istanbul Basaksehir in what is going to be one of the most interesting matches. The winners of this tie will play the winners of LASK-Manchester United in the quarter-finals. Basaksehir will be on cloud nine coming into this game after winning the first Super Lig title in their history in the middle of July. They fought off competition from the traditional powerhouses in the country to become only the sixth team to finish top of the table. Their form has not been that good as of late. They have won just one out of their last 3 matches. With that being said they should have big confidence coming to this game since, as already said, they have won their first-ever Turkish League title. Copenhagen, on the other hand, are in an even worse form, they have won only 2 out of their last 6 matches. Copenhagen missed out on championship glory this season, losing their domestic league crown to Midtjylland. In the Europa League this season, the most eye-catching results that Copenhagen have picked up have been away from home. The 3-1 win away to Celtic was a scalp they could wave around proudly following a close-fought 1-1 first-leg draw. Copenhagen tends to play low-scoring games on their own ground with six of the seven Europa League matches on their patch featuring fewer than three goals.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs VfL Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg will have to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg of this UEFA Europa League round of 16 against Shakhtar Donetsk, as they eye a fourth quarter-final appearance in the competition. The first leg at Wolfsburg saw Shakhtar open and close the scoring – Junior Moraes and Marcos Antonio respectively being the scorers. Wolfsburg found their goal through John Brooks, but face an uphill battle in this trip. Shakhtar is in a terrific form. They have won 4 out of their last 6 matches. And the other 2 matches ended up with a draw. They are averaging 3.67 goals per game in the last 6 matches. Their main scorer is Hirnyk. Wolfsburg is in a tough position, their form is not really good. 3 losses in their last 6 games, they have 4 players who are injured. It is safe to say that it is not looking so good for the Germans.

Sevilla vs Roma

Five-time Europa League winners Sevilla face Roma for a place in the last eight of the competition. The Andalusians finished fourth domestically and will feature in Europe’s premier tournament next year, while Paulo Fonseca’s men clinched fifth in Serie A ahead of Milan. The winner of the tie will play either Wolves or Olympiacos. Sevilla has had an unbelievably good form. They are unbeaten in their last 17 matches. Of course, Roma can’t be overlooked after also enjoying a strong finish to their Serie A term, including a 3-1 victory over champions Juventus on the final day. Roma is unbeaten in eight matches, winning seven of those, but they have major issues defensively and are likely to struggle with Sevilla’s attacking options. Our ProTipster experts see Sevilla as the clear favourites in this matchup. Their offence is simply too good for Romas defence.

ProTipster Expert’s Tip: Sevilla to win @2.18

FC Basel vs Eintracht Frankfurt

Basel and Eintracht Frankfurt will face each other at St Jakob Park Stadium on Thursday for the 2nd leg of their tie in Europa League. Basel has a comfortable lead from the first meeting in Germany, with the winner of the clash to face Wolfsburg or Shakhtar Donetsk in the quarter-finals. Basel head to this clash on the back of a good run; unbeaten in their last six matches but three of these have ended in draws. They have continued with their high scoring returns in recent matches(18 goals in their last six matches) but having conceded eight in the process, they will carry questions over their defence. On the other side, we have Frankfurt. The Germans head to this match with odds heavily stacked against them after a 3-0 loss at home but having finished their domestic season with three wins in four matches, they will feel confident enough for this game. Basel has the advantage here; that of playing at home and having a big lead in the tie, which makes them firm favourites going to this clash. They have also stacked up a run of impressive results recently and the fact that they have been active competitively in recent days should work for them.

ProTipster Expert’s Tip: Basel to win @2.63

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Olympiacos

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Olympiacos meet at Molineux on Thursday evening with their Europa League last-16 tie locked at 1-1 on aggregate. Whoever progresses from the fixture later this week will take on either Roma or Sevilla in the quarter-finals. Wolves have had a long season in the Europa League having started back in the qualifiers in July. They have played 7 Europa League matches at home, winning 6 of them Including each of the last 3 games. There have been some convincing victories against Besiktas and Espanyol. The only home defeat for Wolves in the Europa League this season came in the group stage against Braga. However, they had already secured their place in the knockout phase and there was little riding on the outcome of that game. Olympiacos, on the other hand, will have to speed up the rhythm of the match, but seeing that defender Ruben Semedo will miss the game due to his suspension, away win should not be considered. Wolverhampton is a real force to be reckoned with at home, and we predict that they will prove their worth on the field.
