Africa Cup of Nations: Round of 16 Best Bets
The group stage of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations is over and now the knockout stage starts. The ProTipster crew analyzes the first four matches of this stage...
What to say about the group stage? First of all, there were no major upsets! Maybe it is a surprise that Madagascar has taken the group in front of Nigeria and Guinea, but all the top African teams will play in the knockout stage. The level of football that we have seen in Egypt was pretty low in our opinion. There have been a lot of ‘unders’ and games with one or no goals were more like a rule than an exception.
Now, the knockout will start and we’ll try to give you some insight of Round of 16 matches as well as some potentially good betting pieces of advice.

UGANDA – SENEGAL
In the first round, Uganda has beaten DR Congo 2-0 and basically this win opened them the gate to the Round of 16. With a point against Zimbabwe, they booked their ticket for the knockout round, while against Egypt they were without real chances of getting even a point. Second place took Uganda on Senegal, one of the strongest teams in the competition. Senegal did suffer one defeat, but it came against very strong Algeria and it is no reason for panic. In two other matches against Kenya and Tanzania, Senegal was impressive and won with two clean sheets.
In our opinion, Senegal should win easily here with a clean sheet. Odds against Senegal’s win are between 1.55 and 1.60, but you can try to go with Senegal’s clean sheet or their win with Asian handicap -1 if you want somewhat better odds.
MOROCCO – BENIN
In our opinion, Morocco was one of the favourites to win this tournament. Indeed, they finished their group with three wins, but we can hardly say they delighted us. Their goal difference after the group stage is 3:0 and this will tell us a lot about how they played, although they had a tough draw, being in a difficult group alongside Ivory Coast and South Africa. Morocco now awaits Benin, one of the minor surprises of this tournament. Benin impressively managed to draw against favourites Cameroon and Ghana, but they also couldn’t beat one of the weakest sides – Guinea Bissau.
Benin knows how to defend, but they will have trouble going forwards against excellent Morocco’s defence. Morocco is yet to concede a goal in Egypt, while two Benin’s matches finished 0-0. In our opinion, one should try to go with bet under 1.5 goals @ 2.33, under 1.75 goals @2,06 or even try to guess the exact score – Morocco to win 1-0.
NIGERIA – CAMEROON
Nigeria against Cameroon is one of the classics of African football and it is pity that we will stay without one of those two African heavyweights in the Round of 16. Nigerians secured their place in the Round of 16 with two wins against Guinea and Burundi, and then surprisingly suffered a defeat in the last round against Madagascar. They did make some changes in the lineup for Madagascar, but still, this defeat is a reason for concern. Title defenders Cameroon went through to the knockout phase as the second placed team behind Ghana. Cameroonians did finish group without a defeat, but also with two 0-0 draws, against Ghana and, surprisingly, against Benin.
In our opinion, this is a 50-50 match, as neither of the teams delighted us in the group stage. We expect a hard-fought game and our suggestion would be to try under 1.5 goals @2.19, X @2.94 or even exact score 0-0 for higher odds.
EGYPT – SOUTH AFRICA
Egyptians have huge support in Cairo and they have Mohamed Salah who started scoring for the national team. Enough for the title? Hard to say, but definitely they’re one of the favourites. In the group stage, Egypt has beaten Uganda, DR Congo and Zimbabwe and proved they can go all the way to the end. In our opinion, South Africa doesn’t have many chances against Egypt. They lost against Morocco and Ivory Coast and barely managed to beat weak Namibia in the group. This win against neighbours from Namibia sent South Africans to the knockout stage, but their trip will end here.
In our opinion, Egypt to win @1.60 is a banker, while you can also try to take Egypt to win with a clean sheet.
